Cannes Movies We’re Excited to See, So Far
Cannes Film Festival is a wonderfully glamorous affair where everyone from movie lovers to filmmakers can see new movies long before general release. Starting with Cannes Next at Marché du Film which features a series of industry talks and networking events, to the main film festival itself, there’s plenty to see and do. Combine that with a beautiful coastline and matching weather, it’s no wonder why Cannes a popular event.
With the official list of Cannes Film Festival selection now released, we’ve chosen our pick of films we’re most excited to see, not only because of the storyline, director or cast, but because of the VFX teams who have helped create the magic these lucky attendees will see (or not see) on screen.
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning
Widely claimed as Tom Cruise’s final instalment of the Mission Impossible franchise, this one will surely deliver more action than ever. Sure enough, at almost a 3-hour run time, and judging by the trailer, this will be a stunt and adrenalin bonanza, with plenty of visual effects included.
In fact, the movie’s IMDb’s listing includes a whopping 11 VFX studios so far, including: ILM, MPC, Halon, One of Us, Rise VFX, Lola VFX, BlueBolt, beloFX, The Third Floor, Untold Studios and Clear Angle Studios.
With Cruise and director, Christopher McQuarrie, both said to be in attendance, this will be quite the “pièce de résistance” in Cannes frenzy.
We’re sure we won’t spot all of the invisible VFX in the movie, but we know there will be lots to look out for! We look forward to seeing the studios’ VFX breakdowns for this one…
Highest 2 Lowest
To catch a glimpse of Denzel Washington on the red carpet is reason enough for us to attend, but we’re also keen to see the visual effects in Spike Lee’s crime thriller, Highest 2 Lowest, set in New York.
Folks VFX and Baked Studios are listed on IMDb, alongside various VFX professionals from New York based Phosphene. A so far, small and mighty VFX team.
Sentimental Value
It’s a fully Nordic affair with this comedy-drama set in Oslo, with mostly local cast and crew, too. Director Joachim Trier’s previous movie, The Worst Person in the World, garnered two Oscar nominations, for Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay. It also gained BAFTA, Goya, César and European Film Awards nominations.
VFX studios, Lux Machina and VP Nordic are listed under VFX crew on IMDb.

The Phoenician Scheme
As usual, it’s a star-studded movie for Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, with Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, and Hope Davis.
With his trademark unique visual style, cinematography and attention to detail, we’re sure he’d need to collaborate with a team of visual effects stars too. Freefolk and a selection of independent VFX pros feature on IMDb so far.
